Kota Tinggi’s fireflies are the reason to go in 2026. After dark, boats head out on the Johor River (Sungai Johor), where colonies of fireflies flash together in the mangrove trees along the banks. The town’s famous waterfall is a different story: at time of writing it has been closed to the public for safety after repeated flood damage, with no reopening date announced. This guide explains how the firefly trips work, what to expect, what is happening with the falls, and how to fill the rest of your day.

How a Kota Tinggi firefly tour works
The fireflies you will see are synchronous fireflies, Pteroptyx tener. Instead of blinking at random, whole trees of them pulse almost in time, which is why people describe the riverbank as looking like a string of fairy lights. They gather in the mangroves and berembang trees that line the lower Johor River, and they only put on a show once it is properly dark.
Trips are simple. You board a small boat with life jackets at a jetty, the boatman runs downstream or across to the darkest stretches of bank, then cuts the speed and drifts close to the trees. Most guides talk about the insects’ life cycle and why the mangroves matter. There are two main styles of trip:
Firefly park boat rides
A few parks on the river outside town are set up mainly for firefly viewing, with a waiting area, a jetty and short boat rides of about 30 to 45 minutes. Travellers describe them as basic but well run, and some play recorded commentary in Mandarin and English. Operators and names change over time, so check recent reviews and confirm the boarding point before you go.
Kota Tinggi River Cruise
In mid-2026 Bernama reported on Kota Tinggi River Cruise, which runs a 6.7 km trip on the Johor River from Pangkalan Kota Jetty in town. Besides a day cruise with history commentary, it offers sunset, firefly and dining cruises. The longer route passes landmarks linked to the old Johor sultanate, so it suits families who want more than a quick look at the lights. Departure times differ between weekdays and weekends, so check which evenings run firefly trips.
Tips for seeing the most fireflies
- Go after full dark. The first boat after sunset is popular, but the display gets stronger as the sky darkens.
- Pick a dry evening. Heavy rain can cancel boats, so keep your plan flexible in the wet season and ask the operator on the day.
- No flash, no torches. Bright light disturbs the insects and spoils the view for everyone on the boat. Some operators ban photos altogether.
- Manage expectations with cameras. Phones struggle to capture fireflies. Put it away and just watch.
- Cover up. Long sleeves and insect repellent help a lot on the river at night.
- Bring cash. Small jetties and riverside restaurants often prefer ringgit.
- Keep little ones close. Life jackets are provided, but boats are low to the water and it is very dark.
Kota Tinggi Waterfall: what is happening
The waterfall at Lombong, at the foot of Gunung Muntahak, was for decades Johor’s best-known recreational falls, with tiered cascades dropping more than 30 metres, shallow pools and chalets in the forest. It sits roughly 15 km from town.
Floods in 2019, 2022 and 2023 badly damaged the site. In late 2024 the Johor Menteri Besar told the state assembly that the falls would stay closed for safety while the state studied how to upgrade the infrastructure and deal with sudden water surges. At time of writing we have found no announcement that it has reopened.
- Do not plan a trip from Singapore around the falls alone.
- Before you go, check the Kota Tinggi district council (Majlis Daerah Kota Tinggi) channels or Tourism Johor for the latest status.
- If it does reopen, wear shoes with grip, keep children in the shallow pools, and leave the water at once if it rains upstream or the flow rises.
Other things to pair with the fireflies
The firefly boats only start at night, so most visitors fill the afternoon nearby.
History along the Johor River
After Melaka fell in the 16th century, the Johor sultanate rebuilt itself along this river. Johor Lama, the old riverside capital, and Kampung Makam, where several sultans are buried, are both near Kota Tinggi. A daytime river cruise or a short drive covers the main sites. In town, the Titian Laksamana suspension bridge is a pleasant spot for a stroll by the water.
Panti forest
The lowland rainforest around Gunung Panti is a well-known birdwatching area. Guided dawn walks run from the Desaru side; ask the operator about pick-up points.
Seafood dinner by the river
Some firefly jetties have a simple seafood restaurant next door, and an early dinner fills the gap between sunset and the darkest part of the evening.
Continue to Desaru
Kota Tinggi sits on the way to Desaru Coast. If you are heading to the resorts, a firefly evening is an easy add-on; see our list of things to do in Desaru Coast.
A simple afternoon-to-night plan
- Early afternoon: leave Singapore and cross into Johor before the evening rush.
- Late afternoon: heritage stops along the river or a walk in town.
- Sunset: early seafood dinner near the jetty.
- After dark: firefly boat trip.
- Late evening: drive back and cross into Singapore.
Getting there and back at night
The catch with fireflies is the timing. You finish on the river well after dark, an hour or so from the Causeway, and public transport back to Singapore at that hour is slow or non-existent. A private car solves this neatly. With Luxway SGMY, the driver picks you up anywhere in Singapore, you stay in the car at both immigration checkpoints, and you can keep the same car and driver for the whole outing on our hourly Day Trip Service (a 10 or 12-hour package usually suits a firefly evening). One fare covers the whole car, with no deposit. For more on when the checkpoints are quietest, see our border travel timing guide.
