Private Car from Singapore to Melaka (Malacca)
Melaka is the most rewarding long drive you can make from Singapore. In about three hours you swap HDB blocks for a UNESCO-listed old town of red Dutch buildings, Peranakan shophouses, temples and riverside cafés. With Luxway SGMY a private car picks up your group from any address in Singapore, carries you through both checkpoints without unloading a single bag, and stops outside your hotel or at the edge of the heritage quarter.
You pay one fixed price for the whole car, and it already covers tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking. There is no deposit — settle with your driver in cash when you arrive — and because we run 24/7, an early start to beat the Causeway queue is never a problem.

Things to Do in Melaka
Almost every major sight lies inside a compact old town on both banks of the Melaka River. Once your driver drops you off, the best way to explore is on foot, with a trishaw ride thrown in for fun.
Stadthuys & Dutch Square
The salmon-red town hall built during Dutch rule in the 1600s faces Christ Church, a clock tower and a fountain — the picture everyone takes in Melaka.
A Famosa & St Paul’s Hill
The stone gate of A Famosa is the last piece of the old Portuguese fortress. Walk up behind it to the roofless ruins of St Paul’s Church for a breezy view over the town and the sea.
Jonker Street Night Market
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings Jonker Street closes to cars and fills with snack stalls, trinkets and street performers. Arrive early if you want room to move.
Melaka River Cruise
A slow boat ride past wall murals, restored warehouses and the stilt houses of Kampung Morten. Go after sunset, when the riverbanks are lit up.
Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum
A preserved townhouse on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock that shows how wealthy Straits Chinese families lived, from carved screens to hand-painted floor tiles.
Cheng Hoon Teng & Harmony Street
Malaysia’s oldest working Chinese temple stands just steps from a historic mosque and a Hindu temple on the same lane — a small street that tells Melaka’s whole story.
With more time, ride up the revolving Menara Taming Sari tower for a view of the whole coastline, or head to the Portuguese Settlement for a seaside dinner.
What to Eat in Melaka
Many Singaporeans make the trip for the food alone. These are the dishes worth saving room for:
- Chicken rice balls — rice pressed into ping-pong-sized balls next to poached chicken; the well-known shops near Jonker Street often have a queue at lunch
- Nyonya cooking — ayam pongteh, Nyonya laksa, chap chye and colourful kuih from Peranakan kitchens
- Cendol with gula Melaka — shaved ice, green jelly, coconut milk and the dark palm sugar the town is named for
- Satay celup — skewers you dip yourself into a bubbling pot of peanut sauce, a Melaka speciality
- Portuguese Settlement seafood — grilled stingray and devil’s curry by the sea in the evening
Picking up dodol, pineapple tarts or blocks of gula Melaka to take home? There is room in the boot — your driver can stop at a shop on the way out of town.
Planning the Drive: Timing and Rest Stops
The border sets the pace. On a quiet weekday morning you can clear both checkpoints in well under an hour, but Friday evenings, school holidays and the eve of public holidays can add two hours or more. Once in Johor it is about two and a half hours up the North–South Expressway to the Ayer Keroh exit and into town.
Your driver can pull in for a toilet and coffee break along the way — just ask. The usual stops are:
- Machap R&R — about an hour past the border, good for a first stretch and snacks
- Pagoh R&R — roughly two-thirds of the way, with food stalls and clean facilities
- Ayer Keroh R&R — just before the Melaka exit, handy for a last stop before town
Day trip or overnight? Melaka is the one long-distance destination that works as a day trip. Our Day Trip Service on a 12-hour package covers the drive both ways and leaves around five hours to walk the old town and eat. If you want the Jonker Street night market and an unhurried river cruise, book a one-way transfer up and a return pick-up from your hotel a day or two later.
For the drive home on a Sunday, leaving Melaka by early afternoon — or after dinner — usually avoids the worst of the evening queue back into Singapore.
Which Vehicle for Melaka?
For up to six passengers with one large suitcase and a few carry-ons, the Toyota Innova is the practical choice. On a three-hour drive many families prefer the Toyota Alphard, Vellfire or Hyundai Staria: captain seats, more legroom and space for two large suitcases plus four smaller bags — especially welcome for grandparents.
Bigger family reunions and company outings can book the Toyota Hiace (up to 9 with luggage) or the 18-seater van (up to 13). Travelling with little ones? Ask for a child seat when you book — it is a small top-up of SGD 10 per seat.
Every Ride Includes
- Fixed, all-inclusive fare — tolls, fuel, and parking covered
- Zero deposit — pay your driver in cash on arrival
- Door-to-door service — no transfers, no bus terminals
- Stay in the vehicle through immigration at both crossings
- Professional, experienced cross-border drivers
- 24/7 availability
Book Your Melaka Transfer
Send your Singapore pick-up address, your Melaka hotel, the date, roughly when you want to leave and how many are travelling, on WhatsApp or through the online booking form. A written confirmation follows, and the fare is paid to the driver when you get there.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to drive from Singapore to Melaka?
About 3 to 3.5 hours door to door on a normal day. Heavy checkpoint traffic on Friday evenings or before long weekends can add one to two hours.
How much is a private car from Singapore to Melaka?
From SGD 260 one way in a Toyota Innova for the whole car, to any hotel or homestay in Melaka town. Return fares and the bigger vehicles are in the table above.
Is Melaka and Malacca the same place?
Yes. Melaka is the official Malay spelling and Malacca is the older English one — both mean the same historic city and state.
Can we do Melaka as a day trip from Singapore?
Yes. A 12-hour package on our Day Trip Service gives you the drive both ways plus roughly five hours in town. Start early to make the most of it.
Can the driver drop us right at Jonker Street?
The old town has narrow one-way lanes, and Jonker Street itself closes to cars on night-market evenings. Your driver will drop you at your hotel or the closest point that is open to traffic.
Can we stop somewhere on the way?
A short rest stop at an R&R is no problem. For a longer stop, such as lunch at a restaurant, waiting time is charged at SGD 40 per hour — tell us when booking.
Do we need to get out of the car at immigration?
No. Everyone stays seated at both checkpoints. When the Causeway is jammed on a Friday evening, your driver may take the Tuas Second Link instead, since it joins the expressway north towards Melaka.
Can you collect us from our Melaka hotel for the trip home?
Yes. Book a return trip and give us your check-out time; the driver will meet you at the lobby and take you straight back to your door in Singapore.
