Private Car from Singapore to Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is Malaysia’s hill retreat — rolling tea estates, strawberry farms, vegetable terraces and misty cloud forest at around 1,400 to 1,600 metres above sea level. After Singapore’s heat, the cool mountain air is the main attraction: days are mild, evenings call for a jacket, and a pot of local tea with scones never tastes better.

Getting there means a long highway drive followed by a winding mountain road, which is where a private car really helps. Luxway SGMY takes you from your Singapore doorstep, through both checkpoints without getting out, and all the way up to your hotel — stopping whenever anyone needs a break. One fixed fare per car, no deposit, pay the driver on arrival.

Things to Do in Cameron Highlands

The highlands string out along one main road through Ringlet, Tanah Rata, Brinchang and Kea Farm, with farms and viewpoints tucked into side valleys. Most visitors base themselves in Tanah Rata or Brinchang and spend two or three days exploring.

BOH Tea Plantations

Neat rows of tea bushes cover whole hillsides. The Sungai Palas tea centre has a café terrace overlooking the estate — try a pot of tea with a slice of cake while the clouds drift past.

Strawberry Farms

Pick your own strawberries in covered greenhouse farms around Brinchang, then reward yourself with strawberry milkshakes, jam and desserts. Kids love it.

Mossy Forest

Near the summit of Gunung Brinchang, trees are draped in moss, ferns and orchids, often wrapped in cloud. Access and boardwalk sections are sometimes closed for maintenance, so check before you go.

Night Market

The night market between Brinchang and Kea Farm is busiest on weekend evenings — grilled corn, sweet potato balls, strawberry snacks, local vegetables and souvenirs under the cool night sky.

Kea Farm Market & Flower Gardens

Roadside stalls piled high with fresh vegetables, honey and flowers, plus nearby gardens of cactus, roses, lavender and butterflies. Easy to cover in a relaxed half day.

Steamboat Dinner

A bubbling steamboat full of highland vegetables is the classic way to warm up after dark. Restaurants in Tanah Rata and Brinchang serve it every night.

The Mountain Road — and How to Avoid Motion Sickness

The first five or six hours are easy expressway driving. The final climb is different: about 1.5 to 2 hours of curves as the road rises from the lowlands. There are two ways up. The older road from Tapah is narrower with many tight bends and reaches Ringlet and Tanah Rata first. The road from Simpang Pulai, near Ipoh, is wider with gentler gradients and arrives from the Brinchang end. Your driver will pick the better option based on your hotel, the time of day and road conditions.

Because it is a private car, nobody has to suffer in silence — just tell the driver, who will pull over at a safe spot for fresh air. A few simple habits make the climb much more comfortable:

  • Eat a light meal before the climb rather than a heavy lunch
  • Take motion-sickness tablets about half an hour before the hill road if you are prone to it
  • Sit facing forward and look out at the horizon instead of at a phone screen
  • Keep a window cracked open or the air-con cool, and have plastic bags and water handy
  • Ask for a break at the bottom of the mountain road so everyone can stretch first

When to Go and What to Pack

The highlands are cool all year, with daytime temperatures usually in the low to mid twenties and nights dropping into the mid-teens. Afternoon showers are common, especially in the wetter months towards the end of the year, so mornings are best for farm visits and photos. Weekends and Malaysian school holidays bring heavy traffic on the hill roads — a weekday visit is far more relaxing.

Pack a light jacket or fleece, long trousers, comfortable walking shoes with grip for muddy trails, and a compact umbrella. Leave a little space in your bags — most people go home with tea, strawberry jam and fresh vegetables.

Which Vehicle for the Highlands?

On a seven-hour trip ending in hairpin bends, seat comfort makes a real difference. The Toyota Innova is a solid choice for small groups travelling light. The Toyota Alphard, Vellfire and Hyundai Staria have individual captain seats with more support and legroom, which many passengers find steadier on winding roads, plus room for two big suitcases and jackets. Larger families or tour groups can travel together in the Toyota Hiace or 18-seater van.

Many travellers pair the highlands with a night or two in Ipoh for its food and cave temples — both share the same fare, and we can plan the whole loop for you.

Every Ride Includes

  • Fixed, all-inclusive fare — tolls, fuel, and parking covered
  • Zero deposit — pay your driver in cash on arrival
  • Door-to-door service — no transfers, no bus terminals
  • Stay in the vehicle through immigration at both crossings
  • Professional, experienced cross-border drivers
  • 24/7 availability

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get from Singapore to Cameron Highlands?

Plan for about 7 to 8 hours, including the checkpoints, rest stops and the final 1.5 to 2 hours of mountain road. Weekend and holiday traffic up the hill can make it longer.

How much does a private car to Cameron Highlands cost?

From SGD 510 one way in a Toyota Innova — the same as the Ipoh fare, so the climb from the expressway up to the highlands adds nothing extra. Most families staying three or four nights book the return pick-up at the same time.

Which road do you take up the mountain?

Either the Tapah road or the Simpang Pulai road, depending on where you are staying and on traffic. Simpang Pulai is usually gentler for passengers who get carsick.

Can we stop if someone feels sick on the hill road?

Of course. Just tell your driver, who will stop at the next safe place. Short comfort breaks are normal on this route.

Can we visit Ipoh on the same trip?

Yes — it is a popular pairing. Stay in Ipoh first and continue up the hill, or come down to Ipoh afterwards. Send us your dates and we will arrange each leg.

Do I need warm clothes?

A light jacket or sweater is enough for most people. Evenings and early mornings feel chilly compared with Singapore, especially at the Mossy Forest viewpoints.

Can you pick us up from our hotel for the return to Singapore?

Yes. Book a return and give us your check-out time; your driver will meet you at the hotel. For a whole day of sightseeing up in the highlands, ask about our hourly Day Trip Service.
