There is no single best time to visit Malaysia, because the rain moves from coast to coast. As a rule: the east coast (Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and eastern Johor, including Desaru and Mersing) is best from about March to September and wettest from November to January. The west coast (Penang, KL, Melaka and Port Dickson) is driest around January to February and June to July, with the heaviest rain in October and November. Temperatures barely change through the year, so the real question is not heat but rain, sea conditions and crowds.
This guide is based on the Malaysian Meteorological Department's (MetMalaysia) description of the country's climate, plus practical notes for Singapore travellers heading north by road.
How Malaysia's seasons work
MetMalaysia describes four seasons, defined by the wind rather than the temperature:
- Northeast monsoon (roughly November to March): the wet season for exposed areas such as the east coast of the Peninsula, western Sarawak and the northeast coast of Sabah. MetMalaysia usually announces the start date each year; in 2025 it expected the monsoon to begin on 13 November and continue until March.
- Southwest monsoon (roughly late May to September): generally drier across much of the Peninsula.
- Two inter-monsoon periods (around April to May, and October to November): light, changeable winds and frequent afternoon and evening thunderstorms, especially on the west coast.
Temperatures stay warm and steady. MetMalaysia notes that the yearly variation is under 2°C in most places, with April and May usually the warmest months on the Peninsula and December and January the coolest. Even in the wettest months, rain often comes in heavy bursts followed by sunshine, rather than all day.
Month by month: where the weather is best
| Month | West coast (Penang, KL, Melaka, Port Dickson) | East coast (Desaru, Mersing, Kuantan, islands) | Good bets |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Fairly dry; Penang and the north at their driest | Monsoon; rough seas | Penang, Langkawi, Melaka |
| February | Driest month on the southwest coast | Monsoon easing late in the month | Melaka, Port Dickson, KL |
| March | Mostly fine, showers increase | Improving; seas calming | Johor, Melaka, highlands |
| April | Inter-monsoon: hot, afternoon storms | Generally good | East coast resorts, Desaru |
| May | Hot; afternoon storms | Good | East coast, islands |
| June | Drier; one of the better months | Among the driest months | Almost anywhere |
| July | Drier; one of the better months | Among the driest months | Almost anywhere |
| August | Mostly fine; early-morning squalls possible on the southwest coast | Good | East coast, Penang |
| September | Showers increasing | Still fairly good | East coast, highlands |
| October | Wettest period begins | Changeable | City breaks, malls, food trips |
| November | Very wet | Monsoon arrives; heavy rain spells | KL, Genting, indoor attractions |
| December | Easing | Monsoon peak; flood risk in some states | West coast, highlands |
Treat this as a general pattern rather than a promise. Monsoon start dates shift from year to year, and a single storm can affect any coast at any time.
Region by region
Johor Bahru and southern Johor
JB is close enough that you can go in almost any month and simply pick a dry-looking day. Showers are frequent through the year, but malls, food and short trips mean rain rarely ruins a day. It is the east of Johor that changes with the seasons, which matters for beach trips.
Desaru, Mersing and the Johor islands
This coast faces the South China Sea and takes the full force of the northeast monsoon. MetMalaysia has issued warnings in past monsoons of strong winds and waves up to 3.5 metres off eastern Johor and Pahang. For beach days and island hopping, aim for March to September. Ferries from Mersing can be cut back or suspended in rough seas during the monsoon, and some island resorts close or scale back for the season, so check with your resort before you book. See our things to do in Desaru Coast guide, or the Mersing page for the jetty.
Melaka and Port Dickson
MetMalaysia describes the southwest coastal area as having its maximum rainfall in October and November and its minimum in February. From May to August, early-morning squall lines known as "Sumatras" can bring short, violent storms before clearing. Melaka is a good choice in February and from June to August; if you visit in the wetter months, plan museum and food stops for the afternoons.
Kuala Lumpur
KL gets two wet peaks: the main one in October and November, and a smaller one in April and May. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in both, so do outdoor sights like Batu Caves in the morning. June and July are usually the most comfortable months.
Penang and Langkawi
The northwest has its driest weather in January and February, which is why it is a popular escape over the year-end and Chinese New Year holidays. A second, smaller dry spell comes in June and July. October and November are usually the wettest months, with a smaller wet peak in April and May.
Cameron Highlands and Genting
The highlands are noticeably cooler than the lowlands all year, which makes them a good choice in the hot months of April and May. Mist and afternoon rain are common in any season; bring a light jacket and plan tea-estate walks and farm visits for the morning. Our Cameron Highlands guide has ideas.
Weather is only half the story: crowds
For Singapore travellers, school holidays and festivals often matter more than the rain. Penang in January, the Johor resorts in June and Genting at year-end are all popular for the same reason: good weather lines up with holidays on both sides of the border. That means fuller hotels and heavier checkpoint queues. If you can travel just outside these windows, for example in early June before the holidays start, you get the same weather with fewer people. Practical tips for any month
- Check the official forecast. MetMalaysia's website and myCuaca app carry forecasts and warnings for heavy rain and strong winds.
- Plan outdoor activities early. On the west coast, storms tend to build in the afternoon, especially during the inter-monsoon months.
- Watch for flood warnings on the east coast between November and January, and keep travel dates flexible.
- Pack light layers: breathable clothes, a compact umbrella, sunscreen and a light jacket for the highlands and cold malls.
- Check air quality in dry spells. In some years, regional haze affects air quality; Malaysia's Department of Environment publishes an air pollutant index online, and our haze travel update explains what to watch for.
Rainy days are easier by car
A sudden downpour is much less of a problem when your ride is waiting at the door. With a private car from Singapore, your driver picks you up at home, you stay in the car through immigration at both checkpoints, and you are dropped right at your hotel lobby or attraction entrance, with no waiting at bus stops in the rain. On our Day Trip Service, the car stays with you by the hour, so you can switch from a beach plan to a mall or a café when the weather turns. Fares are per car and the same in both directions, with tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking included.
Choose your destination on the Singapore to Malaysia page, see how it works in our booking guide, or Whatsapp us with your dates and we will help you plan around the weather. No deposit; you pay the driver on arrival.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the monsoon season in Malaysia?
The northeast monsoon runs roughly from November to March and brings heavy rain to the east coast of the Peninsula, western Sarawak and northeast Sabah. The southwest monsoon, roughly late May to September, is generally drier. Exact start dates vary each year and are announced by MetMalaysia.
Is December a good time to visit Malaysia?
It depends where you go. December is the peak of the monsoon on the east coast, so it is not ideal for Desaru beaches or island trips. The west coast, KL, Penang and the highlands are better choices that month.
What is the driest month in Melaka?
MetMalaysia describes February as the month with the least rain on the southwest coast of the Peninsula, which includes Melaka.
Can I visit Tioman or other east-coast islands in the monsoon?
Travel is possible on some days, but ferries can be cut back or suspended in rough seas and some resorts close for the season. Check with your resort and the ferry operator before booking.
Is Malaysia much hotter than Singapore?
Lowland temperatures are similar to Singapore's all year. April and May are usually the warmest months on the Peninsula, and the highlands are noticeably cooler.
