Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday 25 December, a public holiday in Singapore and in every Malaysian state, so most people get a three-day weekend from 25 to 27 December. A week later, New Year's Day is Friday 1 January 2027, giving a second long weekend. For a festive break close to home, Johor Bahru's malls and food streets are an easy day out, while Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Penang and the highlands make good two- to four-night trips. This guide covers the dates, where to go, and how to avoid the worst of the year-end Causeway traffic.
Year-end 2026 dates to know
| Date | Singapore | Malaysia |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday 24 December | Working day | Christmas Eve is a holiday in Sabah only |
| Friday 25 December | Christmas Day (public holiday) | Christmas Day (public holiday in all states) |
| Thursday 31 December | Working day; last day of the school holidays | Working day; last day of the school holidays |
| Friday 1 January 2027 | New Year's Day (public holiday) | Public holiday in most states, but not in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis or Terengganu |
| Monday 4 January 2027 | Schools reopen | Schools reopen |
Two things stand out. First, both countries' school holidays overlap for the whole of December: Singapore's run from 21 November to 31 December, and schools in Johor and most other Malaysian states are off from 5 to 31 December. Second, New Year's Day is a normal working day in Johor, so shops, clinics and services in JB keep regular hours on 1 January while Singapore is on holiday.
Christmas in Johor Bahru
JB does Christmas the Malaysian way: big malls go all out with trees, lights and festive displays from late November, and the city's food scene carries on as usual. It is an easy festive day trip, especially if you avoid the peak crossing times.
Malls for festive decorations and year-end shopping
- Mid Valley Southkey – one of JB's largest malls, with a wide choice of restaurants under one roof.
- Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru and Toppen – two big family-friendly malls; Toppen sits next to IKEA Tebrau, so you can combine the two.
- Johor Bahru City Square and KOMTAR JBCC – right by the checkpoint, so they suit a short visit.
- Johor Premium Outlets in Kulai – outdoor outlet shopping for brand-name bargains.
Most malls run year-end sales, so it is a good time to shop. Just remember the customs rules on the way home: Singapore Customs gives GST import relief of up to S$500 if you have been away 48 hours or more, and S$100 if you have been away for less than 48 hours (at time of writing). There is no duty-free concession for liquor when you arrive from Malaysia, and the relief does not cover alcohol or tobacco.
Christmas services
JB's Catholic and Protestant churches hold Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services, often in several languages. Times are announced by each parish in December, so check the church's own page or social media before you go and arrive early, as services fill up.
For fares and pick-up options, see our Singapore to Johor Bahru private car page.
Beyond JB: festive breaks in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur
KL is the place for big Christmas displays. In recent years the malls along Bukit Bintang and around KLCC, including Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Suria KLCC, have put up some of the country's most elaborate trees and light installations, and the newer TRX development has joined in. New Year's Eve usually brings large crowds to the city centre, so expect road closures and very busy roads around KLCC and Bukit Bintang that night. KL is about 4 to 5 hours away by car. See our Singapore to Kuala Lumpur page.
Melaka
Melaka has some of Malaysia's oldest churches. The red-painted Christ Church on Dutch Square was completed in 1753, and St Peter's Church, built in 1710, is the oldest Catholic church still in use in the country. Add Jonker Walk, a river cruise and Nyonya food for a relaxed two-day trip about 3 to 3.5 hours from Singapore. See our Melaka page.
Penang
George Town's St George's Church, founded in 1818, is the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia, and the Cathedral of the Assumption is a short walk away. Combine church visits with street art, hawker food and a night at Batu Ferringhi. Penang is 8 to 9 hours by road, so plan at least three nights. See our Penang page.
Genting and Cameron Highlands
If you want "Christmas weather", head for the hills. Genting Highlands, about 5 to 5.5 hours away, and Cameron Highlands, about 7 to 8 hours away, are noticeably cooler, especially in the evenings. Genting has its theme park, malls and cable car; Cameron Highlands has tea estates and strawberry farms. See our Genting and Cameron Highlands pages.
A note on beaches and islands
December falls in the northeast monsoon, which brings heavy rain and rough seas to the east coast. Resort stays in Desaru are still popular, especially for the pools and the waterpark, but island trips from Mersing (Tioman, Rawa and others) are often limited or closed at this time of year. Check with your resort before you book.
Year-end Causeway traffic: the days to avoid
December is one of the busiest months at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints. Based on the holiday calendar, these are the likely pressure points:
- Friday 20 to Saturday 21 November – the start of Singapore's school holidays.
- Thursday 24 December (afternoon and evening) – northbound, as families leave for the Christmas long weekend.
- Sunday 27 December (afternoon and evening) – southbound, as everyone returns.
- Thursday 31 December – northbound, for New Year's Eve.
- Sunday 3 January 2027 – southbound, the last day before schools reopen.
Crossing before about 7am, or on a weekday in the middle of the holidays, is usually much easier. Check the live cameras on our Woodlands and Tuas checkpoint traffic page before you leave, and see our public holiday Causeway jams guide for 2027 dates. The RTS Link between Bukit Chagar and Woodlands North will not help this year: its operator announced on 2 October 2026 that passenger service is now expected to start in February 2027.
Practical tips for a year-end trip
- Book early. Hotels in Melaka, Genting and Desaru, and cars for the Christmas and New Year weekends, fill up weeks ahead.
- Check opening hours. Restaurants, clinics and attractions may change their hours on 25 December, and services outside Johor may close on 1 January.
- Pack for rain. Bring umbrellas or ponchos and plan an indoor option for each afternoon.
- Carry some ringgit. Cards and e-wallets are widely accepted in malls, but night markets and small stalls often prefer cash.
- Check passports now. Every traveller needs a passport valid for at least six months, and renewals take longer in the December rush.
For a simple plan that fits a short winter-break day, our JB day trip guide has a ready-made itinerary.
Travelling by private car over the holidays
At year-end, a private car takes the stress out of the crossing. Your driver picks you up at home, and you stay in the car through immigration at both checkpoints, so there is no queuing in the halls with shopping, luggage or tired children. Fares are per car and include tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking. For a JB shopping day, our Day Trip Service books the car and driver for 8, 10 or 12 hours. For KL, Melaka or the highlands, choose a one-way or return transfer. Our MPVs fit families with luggage, and vans suit larger groups.
Year-end dates fill up fast. Check fares on the Johor Bahru page or our Malaysia destinations, use the online booking form, or Whatsapp us to reserve your car. No deposit; you pay the driver on arrival.
