Singapore's year-end school holidays in 2026 run from Saturday 21 November to Thursday 31 December 2026 for MOE primary and secondary schools and MOE Kindergartens, according to the Ministry of Education. Junior college (JC1) and Millennia Institute students break a week later, on 28 November. The new school year starts on Monday 4 January 2027. That gives families six weeks, and Malaysia is the easiest place to use them: Legoland and Johor Bahru are close enough for a day trip, while Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Genting, Cameron Highlands and Penang work for a few nights away. Here are the dates, the best timing, and trip ideas for every age.

Two other notes from MOE's calendar: schools used as GCE O-Level exam venues end their final term earlier, on Friday 23 October, and Deepavali gives everyone a day off on Monday 9 November, just before the holidays. If you are already thinking about next year, the 2027 school holidays are 13–21 March, 29 May–27 June, 4–12 September, and the year-end break starts after school closes on Friday 19 November 2027.

When to go: the late-November sweet spot

Malaysia's own school calendar matters as much as Singapore's. Schools in Johor, Melaka, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and most other states (Group B) close for their year-end break from Saturday 5 December to Thursday 31 December 2026, according to Malaysia's Ministry of Education. That leaves a two-week window, from 21 November to 4 December, when Singapore children are on holiday but Malaysian children are still in school. Theme parks, resorts and hotels in Johor are noticeably calmer during those weekdays, and room rates are often lower than in late December.

The busiest stretch is the Christmas and New Year fortnight, when both countries are on holiday at the same time. If you must travel then, go midweek and book cars and rooms early. See our Causeway jams on public holidays guide for the worst days to cross.

A word on the weather

November to March is the northeast monsoon season. Expect afternoon downpours across the peninsula, and rough seas on the east coast. Beach and island plans in places like Desaru, Mersing and Tioman are the most affected; some island resorts close or reduce ferry services during the monsoon, so check with them before booking. Theme parks, highlands and city breaks are less weather-dependent, and every idea below has an indoor fallback.

Day trips (no overnight bag needed)

Legoland Malaysia and Iskandar Puteri

Legoland Malaysia, in Iskandar Puteri in southwest Johor, is about 1 to 1.5 hours door to door via the Tuas Second Link. It has the main theme park and a separate water park, so for under-12s it is one of the easiest full days out from Singapore. Late November weekdays are the quietest time in the holidays. Details are on our Singapore to Legoland Malaysia page.

Johor Bahru and Mount Austin

For older children and teens, a JB day of malls, cafes and food is hard to beat. Mount Austin is packed with cafes, dessert shops and restaurants, and the big malls nearby make a good rainy-day plan. See our Mount Austin page or the JB day trip guide.

Kota Tinggi

About 1.25 to 1.75 hours away, Kota Tinggi is best known for evening firefly boat trips on the Johor River, a calm, magical outing for children who can stay up late. Note that the town's famous waterfall has been closed for safety after repeated flood damage, with no reopening announced at time of writing. Our Kota Tinggi firefly guide has the details, and fares are on the Kota Tinggi page.

Weekend trips (one or two nights)

  • Desaru Coast (about 2 to 2.5 hours): resorts with big pools and the Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark. The waterpark is a good choice even when the sea is too rough to swim in. See the Desaru page.
  • Melaka (about 3 to 3.5 hours): history that children can see and touch, from the red Stadthuys and the ruins on St Paul's Hill to the river cruise and Jonker Walk night market on weekends. See the Melaka page.
  • UK Farm, Kluang (about 1.75 to 2.25 hours): animals to feed, farm activities and open space, popular with younger children. See the UK Farm Kluang page.
  • Kukup (about 1.5 to 2 hours): a fishing village built on stilts, seafood lunches, and the boardwalk at Tanjung Piai, the southernmost tip of mainland Asia. See the Kukup page.

Longer holidays (three nights or more)

  • Kuala Lumpur (about 4 to 5 hours): the Petronas Twin Towers, the KLCC park and aquarium, Batu Caves and plenty of malls for rainy afternoons. See the Kuala Lumpur page.
  • Genting Highlands (about 5 to 5.5 hours): cool air, the Genting SkyWorlds theme park and the cable car. Pair it with KL to break up the drive. See the Genting page.
  • Cameron Highlands (about 7 to 8 hours): tea plantations, strawberry farms and cool evenings. Many families stop for a night in Ipoh on the way. See the Cameron Highlands page.
  • Penang (about 8 to 9 hours): George Town's street art and food, with beaches at Batu Ferringhi. It suits a road trip of a week or more. See the Penang page.

Practical tips for a school-holiday trip

  • Passports: check every family member's passport, including the children's, is valid for at least six months. It is the most common reason trips go wrong at the checkpoint.
  • Leave early: on Friday afternoons and the first Saturday of the holidays, northbound queues can be long. Leaving before about 7am makes a big difference.
  • Bring ringgit: card and e-wallet payments are common, but small stalls and car parks may want cash.
  • Plan a rainy-day option for every outdoor day, especially in December.
  • Child seats: ask for them when you book if you have young children.

Why families go by private car

With children, the checkpoints are the hardest part of any trip to Malaysia. In a private car you stay in your seat through immigration on both sides, so there is no queuing in the halls with tired kids, buggies and bags. The driver picks you up at home, the fare is per car rather than per person, and child seats are available on request. For day trips, our Day Trip Service hires the car and driver by the hour (8, 10 or 12 hours), so you can do Legoland in the morning and dinner in JB without watching the clock. For bigger groups or grandparents coming along, our MPVs and vans take up to 13 passengers with luggage.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do Singapore schools close for the 2026 year-end holidays?

The last school day for MOE primary and secondary schools is Friday 20 November 2026, and the holidays run from 21 November to 31 December. JC1 and Millennia Institute students break from 28 November.

When does the 2027 school year start in Singapore?

On Monday 4 January 2027. Primary 2 to 6 and K2 pupils start a day later, on Tuesday 5 January.

Are Malaysian schools on holiday at the same time?

Partly. Schools in Johor and most other Malaysian states are on holiday from 5 to 31 December 2026, so attractions get busier in December. Late November is quieter.

Is Legoland Malaysia good during the monsoon season?

Usually, yes. Rain tends to come in afternoon bursts, and outdoor rides may pause during thunderstorms. Go early, bring ponchos and plan indoor breaks. Check the park's official site for any closures.

Can a private car take us from Singapore to two destinations, like KL and Genting?

Yes. Tell us the route when you book and we will quote for the whole itinerary, whether it is a one-way trip with a stop, a return trip, or several days.
