Singapore has five long weekends in 2027: New Year's Day (Fri 1 Jan), Chinese New Year (Sat 6 – Mon 8 Feb), Good Friday (Fri 26 Mar), Hari Raya Haji (Sat 15 – Mon 17 May) and National Day (Sat 7 – Mon 9 Aug). Add a few days of annual leave and you can get much longer breaks. The best deal of the year is in May: take three days off around Hari Raya Haji and Vesak Day and you get nine days in a row. Below are the official dates, the leave days that stretch each break, and which weekends Malaysia shares, since that decides how busy the roads, hotels and checkpoints will be.
Singapore public holidays 2027 at a glance
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) published the 2027 list on 18 June 2026. There are 11 public holidays. Because the second day of Chinese New Year falls on a Sunday, Monday 8 February is also a public holiday.

How to stretch each break with annual leave
These combinations assume a Monday-to-Friday work week. Leave days are counted as working days only.
Chinese New Year: 4 to 9 days
The holiday already runs Saturday to Monday. Take Tue 9 Feb off and you get four days; MOE schools are closed that day too (an off-in-lieu day), so it suits families. Take Tue 9 to Fri 12 Feb (four days of leave) and you have nine days, Sat 6 to Sun 14 Feb. If you are joining a reunion dinner in Malaysia on the eve, Friday 5 February, add that day as well.
Hari Raya Puasa: 5 days for 2 days of leave
Wednesday 10 March sits in the middle of the week. Take Thu 11 and Fri 12 Mar off for five days from Wednesday to Sunday. Singapore's March school holidays start the next day (Sat 13 to Sun 21 Mar), so families can keep going.
Good Friday: 3 days, or 4 with Thursday
A clean Friday-to-Sunday weekend. Add Thursday 25 March if you want a slower start. Good Friday is not a public holiday in Johor, so shops, clinics and offices there run as normal.
Hari Raya Haji and Vesak Day: 9 days for 3 days of leave
This is the best combination of 2027. Hari Raya Haji is Monday 17 May and Vesak Day is Thursday 20 May. Take Tue 18, Wed 19 and Fri 21 May and you are off from Sat 15 to Sun 23 May. Malaysia observes both holidays too, so expect busy highways and resorts on that side as well, and book rooms early.
National Day: 3 or 4 days
Saturday 7 to Monday 9 August. MOE schools also close on Tuesday 10 August, so parents can take that one day for a four-day family trip. These are normal working days in Johor.
Deepavali: 4 days for 1 day of leave
Deepavali is Thursday 28 October. Take Fri 29 Oct and you have Thursday to Sunday off.
The weekends that do not stretch
Labour Day (Sat 1 May) and Christmas Day (Sat 25 Dec) fall on Saturdays, so Singapore gets no extra public holiday on the Monday. MOE schools take Monday 3 May and Monday 27 December as off-in-lieu days. If Saturday is not a working day for you, MOM's rules for employees covered by the Employment Act say your employer should give you another day off or an extra day's pay instead, so ask whether you can take a Friday or Monday in lieu.
Which long weekends Malaysia shares, and why it matters
For a trip across the border, the most useful question is not just "is it a long weekend?" but "is Malaysia on holiday too?". The answer changes how crowded your trip will be.
- Shared holidays (Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji, Vesak Day, Deepavali): traffic builds in both directions, as Singapore residents head north and Malaysians who work in Singapore go home. Hotels in Melaka, KL, Genting and the Johor resorts fill up early.
- Singapore-only long weekends (New Year's Day, Good Friday, National Day): Johor is working normally, so attractions, restaurants and malls are less crowded on the Malaysian side. The checkpoints still get a strong one-way surge, north on the first evening and south on the last.
- Johor-only holidays to keep in mind: Thaipusam (Fri 22 Jan), the Sultan of Johor's Birthday (Tue 23 Mar) and Awal Ramadan (Mon 8 Feb, expected). JB gets busier locally on these days even though Singapore is working.

Trip ideas by length
Three days
Short weekends suit places within about two hours of the border. Johor Bahru and Mount Austin are good for food and shopping, Desaru Coast for a beach resort, and Legoland Malaysia for families. See the Desaru page or browse all Singapore to Malaysia destinations.
Four to five days
Enough time for Melaka, Kuala Lumpur or Port Dickson, with a slow drive and no rushing. Deepavali and the Raya Puasa bridge both fit here.
Nine days
The Chinese New Year and May breaks are long enough for the north: Penang, Ipoh or Cameron Highlands, perhaps with a night in KL on the way up.
Practical tips for long-weekend crossings
- Leave early or late. The evening before a long weekend is the slowest time to go north. Crossing before about 7am, or late at night, is usually far quicker.
- Check the cameras before you set off. Our Woodlands and Tuas checkpoint traffic page shows the official live traffic cameras.
- Choose the crossing to suit the destination. Woodlands is closer for JB city and eastern Johor; the Tuas Second Link often suits Legoland, Melaka and KL.
- Plan your return first. The last evening of any long weekend is the busiest southbound time. Coming back a day later, or very early in the morning, saves a lot of waiting.
- Book early for shared holidays. Rooms, restaurants and cars go fast over Chinese New Year and the May break.
- Check your passports now. Malaysia needs at least six months' validity, and renewing one close to a holiday can be stressful.
Making a long weekend easier with a private car
On a busy holiday weekend the crossing is often the most tiring part of the trip. With a private car you stay in your seat through immigration at both checkpoints, so there is no queueing in packed halls with luggage or children, and no transfer to a bus or taxi on the other side. The driver picks you up at your door anywhere in Singapore and takes you straight to your hotel, and the same applies on the way home. Our drivers cross the border every day and know when each route tends to move. Fares are per car and the same in both directions, with tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking included.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many long weekends does Singapore have in 2027?
Five: New Year's Day (1–3 Jan), Chinese New Year (6–8 Feb), Good Friday (26–28 Mar), Hari Raya Haji (15–17 May) and National Day (7–9 Aug). Labour Day and Christmas fall on Saturdays, so they do not create long weekends.
Is Monday 8 February 2027 a public holiday in Singapore?
Yes. The second day of Chinese New Year falls on Sunday 7 February, so MOM has made Monday 8 February a public holiday. MOE schools are also closed on Tuesday 9 February.
What is the best way to use annual leave in 2027?
The May break gives the most days off for the least leave: taking 18, 19 and 21 May gives nine days in a row from 15 to 23 May. Chinese New Year is next, with nine days for four days of leave.
Which Singapore long weekends are quieter in Malaysia?
New Year's Day, Good Friday and National Day are not public holidays in Johor, so attractions and malls there are usually less crowded. The checkpoints can still be busy as Singapore residents travel.
Are the 2027 Malaysian holiday dates final?
Malaysia has published its official 2027 list, but Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji, Deepavali and Awal Ramadan are marked as subject to change. Check closer to the date before booking anything that cannot be moved.
