For most Singapore visitors, the best place to stay in Johor Bahru is the city centre around JB Sentral and the CIQ checkpoint: it is closest to the Causeway, packed with food and malls, and you can walk to many sights. Families going to Legoland should stay in Iskandar Puteri instead, and café-hoppers who want space often prefer Mount Austin. This guide compares the main areas first, then names a few well-known hotels in each, so you can match the base to the trip.

City Centre and CIQ: closest to Singapore

The Sultan Iskandar CIQ complex (Bangunan Sultan Iskandar) sits at the JB end of the Causeway, right beside JB Sentral, the city’s main rail and bus hub. Around them are the malls of City Square and Komtar JBCC, the hotels along Jalan Wong Ah Fook, and a short walk away the heritage streets of the old town, including Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, with their cafés and old shophouses.

Why stay here

  • Shortest hop to Singapore. You are minutes from the checkpoint, which matters when you want to leave early and beat the queue.
  • Food on your doorstep. Hawker stalls, dim sum, mamak and cafés are all walkable.
  • Shopping without a car. City Square and Komtar JBCC are next to several hotels.
  • RTS Link next door. The new cross-border rail line will end at Bukit Chagar, close to JB Sentral. Passenger service is now expected to start in February 2027, after a delay announced in October 2026; our RTS Link guide has the latest.

Things to know

  • Roads around the checkpoint jam badly on Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons and public holidays. Being close does not always mean being quick by car at those times.
  • Walking routes from hotels to the CIQ use link bridges and busy roads. It is fine with a backpack, much harder with suitcases, a pram or older relatives.
  • Some older buildings in the centre feel tired; read recent reviews, not just star ratings.

Hotels to look at

  • Holiday Inn Johor Bahru City Centre – part of the Komtar JBCC development, beside City Square, with a covered skywalk to the Persada Johor convention centre.
  • Amari Johor Bahru – on Jalan Wong Ah Fook opposite Komtar JBCC, a short walk from City Square, with a pool and a children’s pool.
  • DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru – on Jalan Ngee Heng, a short drive from the checkpoint rather than a walk, with an outdoor pool that guests rate highly.

Iskandar Puteri: Legoland and the marina

Iskandar Puteri, on the western side of JB near the Tuas Second Link, is newer, greener and quieter. It includes Medini, home to Legoland Malaysia Resort, and Puteri Harbour, a waterfront marina with restaurants. The Second Link is often less congested than the Causeway, which makes this side attractive for families coming from western Singapore.

Why stay here

  • Walk or take a short drive to Legoland in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive.
  • Larger rooms and serviced apartments suit families with lots of luggage.
  • Calm evenings by the marina rather than city traffic.

Things to know

  • It is a long drive from here to the old town food streets and the city-centre malls.
  • There is less street life at night than in the centre.

Hotels to look at

  • LEGOLAND Hotel – themed family rooms steps from the theme park, water park and SEA LIFE. Our Legoland Malaysia tips explain whether it is worth it.
  • Somerset Medini Iskandar Puteri – serviced apartments with kitchens in Medini, close to Legoland.
  • Fraser Place Puteri Harbour – serviced apartments overlooking the marina, with kitchenettes, an indoor pool and a gym.

Mount Austin and Tebrau: cafés and space

North-east of the city centre, Mount Austin is JB’s busiest café and restaurant district, and nearby Tebrau has big-box shopping such as IKEA Tebrau, Toppen and AEON Tebrau City. Accommodation here is mostly serviced apartments and short-stay rentals rather than big-brand hotels.

  • Good for a slower weekend of brunches, desserts and home shopping.
  • Apartments give families more room and a kitchen.
  • It is spread out, so plan on a car or ride-hailing for every outing.

Coming mainly for the cafés? Our Mount Austin page covers getting there from Singapore.

Bukit Indah and Skudai: suburban and mall-based

Between the city and Iskandar Puteri, the suburbs of Bukit Indah and Skudai are built around large malls such as AEON Bukit Indah and Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru. They suit families visiting relatives in the west of JB or anyone who wants an easy supermarket-and-food-court base. There is little to see on foot, so most visitors here have a car.

Which area for which trip?

  • One night of food and shopping: City Centre.
  • Legoland with young kids: Iskandar Puteri, ideally the Legoland Hotel or a serviced apartment in Medini.
  • Café weekend with friends: Mount Austin.
  • Business in the city: City Centre, near Komtar JBCC.
  • Elderly parents or lots of luggage: any hotel with a proper drop-off porch. Getting door to door matters more than walking distance to the CIQ.

Practical booking tips

  • Tourism tax: Malaysia charges foreign guests a tourism tax, collected by the hotel at check-out. It was RM10 per room per night at time of writing.
  • Book early for long weekends and Singapore school holidays, when JB hotels fill with Singapore families.
  • Check the drop-off point. In malls and mixed developments the hotel lobby can be on an upper floor; confirm the entrance so your driver goes straight to it.
  • Plan your return. Sunday afternoon is the busiest time to cross back into Singapore. A morning or late-evening departure is usually smoother.

Getting to your hotel without the hassle

Wherever you stay, the hard part is the border, not the distance. Walking across with luggage means queuing in the immigration halls on both sides. With a Luxway SGMY private car, your driver picks you up anywhere in Singapore, you stay in the car through immigration at both checkpoints, and you are dropped at your hotel lobby. Your driver can use the Causeway for the city centre and Mount Austin or the Second Link for Iskandar Puteri, depending on traffic. When it is time to go home, we collect you from the lobby too. Fares are per car, with no deposit, and you pay the driver on arrival.
