Johor Bahru is far more than a quick shopping run. In one day you can walk a heritage street, eat your way through Mount Austin, take the kids to Legoland Malaysia and finish at a night market, all without travelling far from the Causeway. Here are 25 ideas for 2026, grouped by mood, using places we have checked are operating at time of writing. Opening times change often in JB, so confirm with each place before you set off.

Heritage and culture

1. Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque

Overlooking the Strait of Johor, this white mosque blends Victorian and Malay architecture and is one of JB’s best-known landmarks. Visitors should dress modestly, remove their shoes and avoid prayer times, especially Friday midday.

2. Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple

Tucked among the towers on Jalan Trus, this small temple dates back to the 19th century and is shared by the city’s five main Chinese dialect groups. It is the centre of the annual Chingay procession in the first lunar month.

3. Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Street

Named after an early leader of JB’s Chinese community, this short street of restored shophouses is lined with cafés, old-style eateries and small shops. Walk it in the morning before the heat builds.

4. Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple

A Hindu temple whose interior is covered in mirrored glass mosaic. It reopened after a two-year restoration in 2025, and visiting hours for tourists differ from those for devotees, so check before you go.

5. A kopitiam breakfast in the old town

Start the day like a local with kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs and a strong kopi in one of the old coffee shops around the city centre.

Food and night markets

6. Café-hop in Mount Austin

Mount Austin is JB’s café and dessert district, packed with bubble tea shops, brunch spots and Korean and Japanese restaurants. See our Mount Austin page for getting there by private car.

7. A bak kut teh lunch

Johor’s version of the herbal pork rib soup is a weekend ritual for many Singaporeans. Go early, as the most popular shops sell out by lunchtime.

8. A seafood dinner

Chilli crab, butter prawns and steamed fish usually cost less here than in Singapore. Agree on the price per kilo before the kitchen starts cooking.

9. A weekly pasar malam

There is a night market somewhere in JB on most evenings, from KSL on Monday to Permas Jaya on Sunday. Our JB night market guide lists them day by day.

10. Johor Jaya Night Food Street

A strip of evening stalls serving grilled stingray, sambal lala, satay and oyster omelette, open on most nights.

11. Bargain-hunt at Pasar Karat

The city-centre night bazaar is better for cheap clothes, accessories and curios than for dinner. Its site has moved in recent years, so check the current location first.

Shopping

12. JB City Square and KOMTAR JBCC

Right by the CIQ, these two malls are the easiest first stop after the checkpoint. City Square is being renovated until late 2027 but stays open.

13. SKS City Mall JBCC

JB’s newest city mall opened in May 2026 beside the Sheraton Johor Bahru, with new cafés, a Village Grocer and an indoor playground.

14. The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey

Johor’s largest mall, with a SOGO department store, a GSC cinema, a big BookXcess and more than 300 tenants.

15. IKEA Tebrau, AEON Tebrau City and Toppen

Three neighbours for furniture, homeware and groceries in a single stop. Compare IKEA prices with Singapore before buying bulky items.

16. Johor Premium Outlets

About 150 designer and sportswear outlet stores in an open-air village near Kulai. Our Johor Premium Outlets guide covers brands and tips.

17. Budget buys at KSL City Mall

Affordable fashion, gadgets and a Lotus’s hypermarket, with the famous night market outside on Mondays. For help choosing between malls, read JB shopping malls: which mall for what.

Family fun and the outdoors

18. Legoland Malaysia and MINILAND Singapore

The theme park in Iskandar Puteri unveiled a refreshed MINILAND Singapore in August 2025, built from more than 1.5 million LEGO bricks, with Marina Bay Sands and a rotating Singapore Flyer. See our Legoland Malaysia page for transfers.

19. ESCAPE Johor Bahru at Paradigm Mall

A large indoor adventure park with rope courses, nets and climbing walls, plus an ice rink elsewhere in the mall. ESCAPE tickets are sold online only.

20. Zoo Johor and its Night Zoo

Malaysia’s oldest zoo reopened in 2024 after a major upgrade. In March 2026 it launched a Night Zoo on Friday to Sunday evenings, which drew more than 7,000 visitors on its first night.

21. SIREH Park

A large green park in Iskandar Puteri with kayaking, cycling, an Edufarm with farm animals and glamping. In 2025 the Malaysia Book of Records named it the country’s largest urban community green recreational park.

22. Sunset at Danga Bay

Stroll the waterfront and have dinner with a view of the Strait of Johor at Beletime Danga Bay.

23. A foot reflexology session

Massage and reflexology centres are found across the city and in most malls. After a day of walking, an hour of foot reflexology is the perfect reset before the drive home.

Beyond the city

24. A beach day in Desaru Coast

On Johor’s east coast, Desaru has long beaches, resorts and the Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark. See our Desaru page.

25. Seafood in Kukup or waterfalls in Kota Tinggi

Head west to the stilt-house fishing village of Kukup for a seafood lunch, or north-east to Kota Tinggi for waterfalls and an evening firefly-watching boat trip on the river.

Tips for planning your JB day

  • Group stops by area. JB traffic is heavy at peak times. Pair the city centre with Tebrau, or Legoland with Bukit Indah and Johor Premium Outlets on the Second Link side.
  • Pick your crossing. The Woodlands Causeway is closest to the city centre, while the Tuas Second Link is often quicker for Iskandar Puteri and Legoland. See our guide to border travel timing for the busiest hours.
  • Go on weekdays if you can. Weekends, Malaysian public holidays and Singapore school holidays bring the longest queues.
  • Know the RTS Link timeline. The new rail shuttle between Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar is expected to start passenger service in February 2027, according to the operator’s latest update. Until then, road crossings remain the main option.
  • Carry ringgit and a QR payment app. Most malls take cards, but stalls and small shops prefer cash or QR.
  • Remember GST relief. Singapore Customs allows up to S$100 of new goods without GST if you were away for under 48 hours, at time of writing.

Seeing more of JB with a private car

Many of these ideas, such as Mount Austin, Legoland, SIREH Park and the night markets, are spread across the city and hard to link up by bus. With Luxway SGMY, a private car collects you anywhere in Singapore and you stay in the vehicle through immigration at both checkpoints. Fares are per car and include tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking; a Toyota Innova to Mount Austin or Legoland Malaysia starts from SGD 100 one way. If you want to visit several places, our Day Trip Service keeps a car and driver with you for 8, 10 or 12 hours.

Start planning

Choose your favourite ideas, then see our Singapore to Johor Bahru private car page for vehicles and rates. Book online or Whatsapp us with your plan. We run 24/7, there is no deposit, and you pay the driver on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one day enough for Johor Bahru?

One day is enough for two or three stops in the same area, such as a heritage walk, lunch in Mount Austin and a mall. For Legoland plus shopping, or a trip out to Desaru, consider staying a night.

What is there to do in JB with kids?

Legoland Malaysia, ESCAPE Johor Bahru at Paradigm Mall, Zoo Johor and SIREH Park’s Edufarm are all good choices for children. Mall play centres are a useful backup on rainy days.

Which checkpoint should I use for JB attractions?

The Woodlands Causeway is closest to the city centre, Tebrau and Mount Austin. The Tuas Second Link is usually better for Legoland, Bukit Indah and Johor Premium Outlets. Your driver will choose based on traffic on the day.

Is the RTS Link open yet?

Not yet. The operator’s latest update says passenger service between Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar is expected to begin in February 2027, after testing is completed.

What can I do in JB in the evening?

Visit a pasar malam, eat at Johor Jaya Night Food Street, watch the sunset at Danga Bay, or book Zoo Johor’s Night Zoo on Friday to Sunday. Plan your return around the evening rush at the checkpoints.
