KLIA and KLIA2 are two separate terminals at the same airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and since 2023 they have officially been called Terminal 1 (the old KLIA) and Terminal 2 (the old klia2). As a rule of thumb, AirAsia and most low-cost airlines use Terminal 2, while Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air and most full-service international airlines use Terminal 1. The buildings are not walking distance apart, so checking your terminal before you leave home really matters.

The names: KLIA, klia2, T1 and T2

Kuala Lumpur International Airport sits in Sepang, about 45 km south of Kuala Lumpur city. It opened with one large main terminal, known simply as KLIA. In May 2014 a second terminal for low-cost carriers opened, branded klia2, replacing the old Low Cost Carrier Terminal. In 2023 the government and Malaysia Airports agreed to rebrand them as KLIA Terminal 1 and KLIA Terminal 2.

You will still see all four names on tickets, booking sites, road signs and in conversation. They map like this:

Name you might seeSame asMainly used by
KLIA, KLIA Main, KLIA1Terminal 1Full-service airlines
klia2, KLIA2Terminal 2AirAsia group and other low-cost airlines

Both terminals share the airport code KUL, so the code on your ticket will not tell you which one you need.

Which airlines use Terminal 1?

Terminal 1 is the home of Malaysia Airlines and most full-service international carriers. At the time of writing, airlines operating from Terminal 1 include:

  • Malaysia Airlines (most of its flights)
  • Batik Air Malaysia
  • Firefly jet flights, which moved from Subang to Terminal 1 in August 2025
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Most Middle Eastern, European, North Asian and other full-service airlines

Terminal 1 has a main building and a separate satellite building for many international gates. The two are linked airside by the Aerotrain, which returned to full service in July 2025 after a long upgrade. Allow time for this ride if your gate is in the satellite.

Which airlines use Terminal 2?

Terminal 2 was built for low-cost airlines and is the main base of the AirAsia group. At the time of writing, airlines operating from Terminal 2 include:

  • AirAsia (Malaysia) and AirAsia X
  • Thai AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia and Philippines AirAsia
  • Other low-cost carriers, such as Scoot and Cebu Pacific

Terminal 2 is directly connected to the Gateway@klia2 mall, which is where you will find most of the shops and food before security.

The traps: codeshares and look-alike brands

Codeshare flights

Your terminal depends on the airline that operates the flight, not the one that sold you the ticket. If you booked a codeshare, look for "operated by" on your booking and check which terminal that airline uses.

Batik Air vs AirAsia

Batik Air is a low-fare airline, but it does not fly from Terminal 2. It uses Terminal 1. This catches many travellers out, especially those who assume every budget fare leaves from klia2.

Firefly

Some Firefly flights still use Subang Airport, which is a completely different airport near Kuala Lumpur city, while its jet flights use KLIA Terminal 1. Check the departure airport on your booking carefully.

Schedules change

Airlines do move terminals from time to time. Treat the lists above as a guide, and confirm on your e-ticket, the airline's app or the airport's flight information page a day or two before you fly.

How to check your terminal in a minute

  1. Open your e-ticket or booking confirmation and find the departure line for Kuala Lumpur. Many airlines print "Terminal 1" or "Terminal 2" right next to it.
  2. If it only says KUL, look for the operating airline, the name after "operated by" or the two-letter code at the start of the flight number.
  3. Match that airline against the lists above, then confirm in the airline's app or on the airport's departures page, which shows the terminal for each flight.
  4. Write the terminal in your trip notes and send it to whoever is driving you, so nobody has to guess at the last junction.

Landing at KLIA

The same rule works in reverse. You arrive at the terminal your operating airline uses, so anyone meeting you needs to know it too. If you are flying in on AirAsia and your family is waiting at Terminal 1, they are in the wrong building, and the train or shuttle between terminals adds time to an already long day. Share your flight number, and the terminal, before you take off.

Moving between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2

If you go to the wrong terminal, or you are connecting between airlines in different terminals, you have two main options:

  • Train: KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit both stop at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The hop between them takes about three minutes, and you need a ticket.
  • Shuttle bus: airport shuttle buses run between the two terminals by road.

On a self-transfer between two separate bookings, you usually need to clear immigration, collect your bags, move to the other terminal and check in again. Plans have been announced for an airside connection between the terminals, but until it is in place, give yourself a generous gap between flights.

Practical tips for Singapore travellers

  • Check the terminal on the day you book, and again the day before you fly.
  • Tell your driver which terminal you need when you book, not when you are approaching the airport; the access roads split well before the terminals.
  • Arriving by road from Singapore? The drive to KLIA is long, so build your timings around the right terminal's check-in cut-off.
  • Self-transferring? Leave several hours between flights in different terminals, especially if you have checked bags.
  • Satellite gates at Terminal 1 need extra time for the Aerotrain; don't linger at the shops.

Getting to the right terminal from Singapore

If you are driving up from Singapore for a flight, the simplest option is a car that takes you to the correct departure kerb. A Luxway SGMY driver picks you up anywhere in Singapore, you stay seated with your luggage through both checkpoints, and you are dropped at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, whichever your airline uses. Fares are per car, include tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking, and you pay the driver on arrival with no deposit. We run 24/7, which matters for early-morning flights from KLIA.

See fares and timings on our Singapore to KLIA private car page, compare every airport route on the airport transfer rates page, and read KLIA transfer from Singapore: what to expect for help planning your departure time. When your flight is set, use our booking guide or Whatsapp us your flight number and terminal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is KLIA2 the same as KLIA Terminal 2?

Yes. klia2 was renamed KLIA Terminal 2 under the 2023 rebranding, and the original KLIA became Terminal 1. Many signs, sites and people still use the old names.

Which terminal does AirAsia use at KLIA?

AirAsia and AirAsia X operate from Terminal 2, the former klia2. Always confirm on your booking, as terminal assignments can change.

Can I walk from KLIA Terminal 1 to Terminal 2?

No. They are separate buildings a few kilometres apart by road. Use the KLIA Ekspres or KLIA Transit train, about three minutes between terminals, or the airport shuttle bus.

Which terminal does Batik Air use?

Batik Air Malaysia operates from Terminal 1, not Terminal 2, even though it sells low fares.

Is KLIA the same as Subang Airport?

No. Subang Airport (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport) is a separate, smaller airport closer to Kuala Lumpur city. Firefly's turboprop flights and some other services use it, so check your departure airport.
