If you live in Singapore, fly from Changi for long-haul and most international trips; it has far more flights and you skip the border. Senai is worth a serious look when you are flying within Malaysia, to Penang, Langkawi, Kuching or Kota Kinabalu, because the same trip from Changi is an international flight with higher airport charges built into the ticket. The saving is real for groups and families, but only once you add the ground transport and the border time into your sums.

For people who live in Johor, the logic flips: Senai is the local airport, and Changi is the one across the border. This guide walks through how to compare the two properly for either case.

The four costs to compare

Comparing headline airfares alone is the classic mistake. For a fair comparison, add up:

  1. The airfare for the same dates, including bags and seat fees.
  2. The airport charges, which are usually already inside the fare but differ a lot between the two airports.
  3. Ground transport to and from each airport, for everyone in your group.
  4. Time, including border crossings and the buffer you need to feel safe about not missing the flight.

Airport charges: a real difference

Every passenger departing Changi on a ticket that starts in Singapore pays passenger charges collected through the airfare. At the time of writing these add up to S$65.20 per person (a Passenger Service and Security Fee of S$46.40, an Aviation Levy of S$8 and an Airport Development Levy of S$10.80). They are scheduled to rise to S$70.20 from 1 April 2027 and keep climbing each year after that. Singapore's new sustainable aviation fuel levy also applies to tickets sold from 1 October 2026 for flights departing from 1 January 2027; in economy to Southeast Asia it is S$1.

Malaysian airports charge a passenger service charge too, regulated by Malaysia's aviation commission, and Senai sets its own rates within the allowed range. For a domestic flight from Senai, it is a small fraction of Changi's charges. On a family of four, that difference alone can amount to more than S$200 per one-way trip before you look at the base fare.

Airfares and choice of flights

Changi is one of the world's major hubs, with direct flights to well over a hundred cities and plenty of daily frequencies to most of them. Senai is a smaller airport focused on domestic Malaysian routes, served mainly by AirAsia, with a short list of international flights to cities such as Bangkok, Jakarta, Surabaya, Ho Chi Minh City, Guangzhou and Kunming at the time of writing. Read our Senai Airport guide for the full picture.

In practice:

  • Domestic Malaysian destinations (Penang, Langkawi, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and others) are often cheaper from Senai, because the flight is domestic and there are more low-cost frequencies.
  • Regional cities served from both can go either way; compare the same dates.
  • Everything else, including long-haul, Japan, Korea, Australia and Europe, means Changi or KLIA.

Fares change daily, so treat this as a starting point and check both airports for your actual dates.

Time: what the border really costs you

StepFrom Changi (Singapore home)From Senai (Singapore home)
Getting to the airportUsually under an hour within SingaporeUsually around an hour or more by car, plus checkpoint queues
Border crossingsNone before you flySingapore exit and Malaysia entry by road
Buffer neededNormal airport bufferExtra buffer for border delays, especially at peak times
Coming homeStraight home after landingMalaysia exit and Singapore entry again by road

The drive itself is not the problem; the checkpoints are. On a quiet weekday morning the crossing can take minutes, while on a Friday evening or the eve of a public holiday it can take hours. That uncertainty is why we always tell passengers flying from Senai to leave generous buffers, and to check our live checkpoint traffic page before setting off. For timing tips, see our guide to border travel timing.

Four common scenarios

Family of four, Singapore to Penang

A strong Senai case. The flight is domestic, airport charges are far lower, and one car fare to Senai covers the whole family. Leave early enough to absorb a slow checkpoint, and fly in the morning on a weekday if you can.

Solo traveller, Singapore to Bangkok

Usually Changi. One person doesn't benefit from splitting a car fare, Changi has many more flights, and the time saved is worth more than the difference in fare.

JB resident flying to Tokyo

Changi (or KLIA). Senai has no flights to Japan. Crossing into Singapore by car straight to the departure kerb saves the hassle of buses with luggage, and on the way home a car from Changi brings you back to your door in Johor.

Singaporean coming home from Kota Kinabalu

Worth comparing. If the Senai fare is clearly cheaper, landing in Johor and driving home can work well, as long as you avoid arriving at the border at peak Singapore-bound times like Sunday evening.

Practical tips before you book

  • Compare door to door, not airport to airport. Put the ground cost for your whole group next to the airfare.
  • Avoid public-holiday peaks at the border when flying from Senai. A cheaper fare is no saving if you miss the flight.
  • Carry your passport even on domestic Malaysian flights. Foreign visitors need it, and Sabah and Sarawak run their own immigration checks.
  • Check entry rules. Singapore citizens are currently exempt from Malaysia's Digital Arrival Card, but most other foreign passport holders need it.
  • Book the return leg at the same time. Coming home is when queues are often worst, so have a ride confirmed.

Where a private car changes the maths

Public transport between Singapore and Senai means at least two vehicles and walking through both checkpoints with your bags. A private car cuts that to a single ride: your driver picks you up at home, you stay in the car at both checkpoints, and you are dropped at the Senai departure kerb. With Luxway SGMY, fares are per car and cover tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking. From Senai to anywhere in Singapore, an Innova starts from SGD 100, and the same starting fare applies from Changi to Johor Bahru, so it is easy to add the ground leg into your comparison. There is no deposit; you pay the driver on arrival.

See our Senai Airport to Singapore private car page for the full fare table, or the Changi Airport to Johor Bahru transfer if you live in Johor and fly from Changi. All airport routes are on the airport transfer rates page. Once your flights are booked, follow our booking guide or Whatsapp us your flight times and we will suggest a pick-up time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to fly from Senai than from Changi?

Often for domestic Malaysian routes, because the flight is domestic and Malaysian airport charges are much lower. For international and long-haul trips, Changi usually wins on choice and convenience. Always compare door to door for your actual dates.

How long does it take to get from Singapore to Senai Airport?

Usually around an hour or a little more by car off-peak, depending on where you start and which checkpoint you use. Border queues at busy times can add a lot more.

How early should I leave Singapore for a Senai flight?

Work back from your airline's check-in cut-off, add the drive, then add a generous border buffer. On weekday mornings a smaller buffer may do; before public holidays and on Friday evenings, allow much more.

Can I take a bus from Singapore to Senai Airport?

There is no direct bus. You would cross to JB by bus, clear both checkpoints on foot, then take the airport shuttle from JB Sentral, which takes much longer with luggage.

Do I pay Changi airport charges if I fly from Senai?

No. Changi's passenger charges apply to flights departing Changi. Flights from Senai carry Malaysian passenger service charges instead.
