From Senai International Airport (JHB) in Johor you can fly direct to about a dozen Malaysian cities, including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, plus a short list of international cities such as Bangkok, Jakarta, Surabaya, Ho Chi Minh City and Kunming. Almost all of these routes are run by the AirAsia group, with Batik Air, Firefly and Malaysia Airlines adding flights to Kuala Lumpur and Penang. For Singapore travellers the best value is usually on the domestic routes, because a Senai flight to Penang or Kota Kinabalu is a domestic ticket rather than an international one.

This guide lists the destinations by region as they stand at the time of writing, explains which ones tend to be worth the trip across the border, and shares practical ways to keep the total cost down. For the terminal itself and transport out of the airport, see our Senai Airport guide.

The table below follows the airport's own airlines and destinations list, checked in October 2026. Airlines change schedules every season, so always confirm on the airline's booking site before you plan around a flight.

Domestic routes: where Senai shines

Penang and Langkawi

These are the routes most Singapore families use Senai for. From Changi they are international flights, with Singapore's departure charges built into every ticket. From Senai they are domestic, and the AirAsia group runs them as part of its Johor network. If you are planning a Penang food trip or a Langkawi beach break over the school holidays, compare both airports for your dates; for a group, the difference can be large. Our Senai vs Changi comparison walks through the sums.

Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Kota Kinabalu and Tawau

Senai has direct flights to five cities in Sabah and Sarawak, which makes it handy for Borneo holidays (Kota Kinabalu for Mount Kinabalu and the islands, Kuching for the Sarawak Cultural Village and Bako National Park) and for Malaysians from East Malaysia who work in Singapore and fly home for festivals. Remember that Sabah and Sarawak have their own immigration checks, so carry your passport even though the flight is domestic.

Ipoh, Alor Setar and Kota Bharu

These smaller cities are a long drive from the south, so a direct flight from Johor saves most of a day. Ipoh suits a food weekend, Alor Setar is a gateway to Kedah and Perlis, and Kota Bharu is the main airport for Kelantan. Frequencies on these routes are lower than on the trunk routes, so book early around public holidays.

Kuala Lumpur: KLIA or Subang?

Kuala Lumpur is Senai's busiest destination, and you can choose between the main international airport (KLIA) and Subang, which is much closer to the city. Batik Air and Firefly fly to Subang, which can suit business trips to Petaling Jaya or central KL. If you are connecting to a long-haul flight, pick KLIA, and check which terminal your onward airline uses in our KLIA vs KLIA2 guide.

International routes from Senai

Senai's international list is short but useful for quick getaways:

  • Bangkok (Don Mueang): the AirAsia group serves Bangkok's low-cost airport. Good for a shopping and food weekend.
  • Jakarta and Surabaya: Indonesia AirAsia links Johor with Indonesia's two biggest cities, popular with business travellers and families visiting relatives.
  • Ho Chi Minh City: a direct AirAsia link to southern Vietnam.
  • Kunming: AirAsia started three flights a week between Johor Bahru and Kunming on 14 December 2025. Kunming is the usual starting point for trips to Dali, Lijiang and the rest of Yunnan.
  • Jeddah and Madinah: Malaysia Airlines lists these routes, which are mainly used by pilgrims; check with the airline or your Umrah agent for dates.

Guangzhou appears on the airport's list as suspended at the time of writing. Holiday charters also appear from time to time; route-tracking site AeroRoutes reported a Batik Air charter from Johor Bahru to Taitung in Taiwan on two dates over the 2026/27 New Year. Charter seats are limited and may not be sold like normal tickets, so ask the airline or a travel agent if one interests you.

How to find cheaper fares from Senai

  1. Search both airports. Run the same dates from Senai and Changi, and from Senai to both KLIA and Subang. The cheaper airport changes from route to route.
  2. Watch the airline sales. Most Senai routes belong to low-cost carriers that run regular promotions. Sign up for their alerts and book when a sale lines up with your dates.
  3. Fly midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday departures are often cheaper than Friday evenings and Sunday returns.
  4. Avoid festival peaks. Fares to Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Kota Bharu climb sharply around Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and the school holidays. Our Malaysia public holidays 2027 guide shows which dates to avoid.
  5. Price the bags. A low base fare can double once checked bags and seats are added. Compare like with like.
  6. Count the ground leg for the whole group. One car to Senai is split between everyone, which is why the savings grow with family size.

Planning around the border

The one thing Changi travellers don't have to think about is the checkpoint. If you live in Singapore and fly from Senai, you cross the Causeway or the Second Link on the way out and again on the way home. A few habits make it painless:

  • Pick morning flights on weekdays when the northbound crossing is usually lighter.
  • Check the queues on our Woodlands and Tuas traffic page before you leave home.
  • Give yourself a generous buffer before check-in closes, and a bigger one on Friday evenings and the eve of public holidays.
  • Avoid landing on Sunday evening or the last day of a long weekend if you are heading back to Singapore, when southbound queues are at their worst.
  • Carry passports for everyone, including children, for both the border and the flight.

Getting to and from Senai by private car

The route that saves you money in the air can cost time on the ground if you rely on buses: you would clear both checkpoints on foot with your bags and then change to the airport shuttle in JB. A private car keeps it to one ride. Your driver picks you up from home anywhere in Singapore, you stay in the car through immigration at both checkpoints, and you are dropped at the Senai departure kerb. On the way back, send us your flight number and your driver will meet you at arrivals and take you home. Fares are per car and the same in both directions, with tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking included, so it is easy to add the ground cost into your comparison.

See fares on our Senai Airport to Singapore private car page or compare every route on the airport transfer rates page. When your flight is booked, follow our booking guide or Whatsapp us your flight times. There is no deposit; you pay the driver on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there flights from Senai Airport to Singapore?

No regular flights at the time of writing. Johor and Singapore are linked by road across the Causeway and the Second Link, so the airport-to-Singapore leg is done by car or bus.

Which airline has the most routes from Senai?

The AirAsia group, by a wide margin. It runs almost all of the domestic routes beyond Kuala Lumpur and most of the international ones.

Can I fly from Senai to Sabah and Sarawak?

Yes. At the time of writing there are direct AirAsia flights to Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Kota Kinabalu and Tawau. Bring your passport, as both states run their own immigration checks.

Does Senai have flights to China?

AirAsia flies to Kunming, three times a week since December 2025. The airport lists its Guangzhou route as suspended at the time of writing, so check the airline for any restart.

Will new routes be added at Senai in 2027?

Possibly. Routes are added and dropped each season, and no new scheduled route had been confirmed for 2027 when this guide was written. The airport's airlines page and the airlines' newsrooms are the best places to watch.
