Senai International Airport (code JHB) is Johor's main airport, about 22 km north-west of Johor Bahru city centre. It is small, easy to get around, and served mostly by domestic Malaysian flights plus a handful of regional routes. For Singapore travellers it is a useful back door: land here from Penang, Kuching or Kota Kinabalu, and you are around an hour's drive from home on a good day.

This guide covers what to expect inside the terminal, which airlines fly there, and the realistic ways to get out, whether you are heading into JB or all the way across the border.

The terminal: small and simple

Senai has a single passenger terminal handling both domestic and international flights, so there is no guessing which building you need. Check-in, security and the gates are a short walk apart, and the arrival hall is compact. Compared with a giant hub, the main advantages are short walks and short queues; the trade-offs are fewer shops and restaurants airside and fewer flights to choose from.

The Aeromall sits next to the terminal and is where you will find most food and drink options, money changers and the counters for the airport bus and taxis. If your driver or family is meeting you, this area is the natural meeting point.

Arriving on a domestic flight

If you fly in from elsewhere in Peninsular Malaysia, there is no immigration on arrival: collect your bags and walk out. Carry your passport anyway. Foreign visitors, including Singaporeans, should have it on every domestic flight, and flights to or from Sabah and Sarawak involve those states' own immigration checks.

Arriving on an international flight

International arrivals clear Malaysian immigration and customs at Senai. Singapore citizens are currently exempt from the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), but most other foreign passport holders, including many Singapore residents who are not citizens, need to submit it before arrival. Check the official immigration site before you fly.

Which airlines fly from Senai?

At the time of writing, the airport's own airline list and current schedules show these carriers:

AirlineExamples of routes
AirAsiaKuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Ipoh, Alor Setar, Kota Bharu, Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau; plus Guangzhou, Kunming and Ho Chi Minh City
Thai AirAsia / Indonesia AirAsiaBangkok (Don Mueang); Jakarta and Surabaya
Batik Air MalaysiaKuala Lumpur (Subang) and Penang
FireflyKuala Lumpur
Malaysia AirlinesKuala Lumpur (KLIA)

AirAsia's group is by far the biggest operator, which is why Senai is such a strong option for budget domestic trips. Routes are added and dropped regularly, so always check the airline's own booking site for the current schedule before you plan around a flight.

Senai is mainly a domestic airport. For long-haul or most international trips, Changi or KLIA will offer far more choice. If you are weighing up the two, read our comparison Fly from Senai or Changi?

Getting out of Senai Airport

Airport bus to JB Sentral

A Causeway Link airport shuttle runs between the airport and JB Sentral in the city centre. The airport says the ride takes around 45 minutes in good traffic, and tickets are sold at the counter in the Aeromall or online. It is the cheapest option, but you will be lifting your own bags on and off.

Taxi

Departing taxis use a prepaid coupon system, with the counter in front of the Aeromall main entrance. The airport estimates around 30 minutes to the city centre. Ask at the counter for the current fare to your area before you buy.

E-hailing

Ride-hailing apps work in Johor and are a common way to get into town. Confirm the pick-up spot in the app, as the arrival kerb can be busy when several flights land together.

Car rental

Rental counters operate at the airport. This makes sense if you are staying in Johor for a few days and are happy to drive yourself.

From Senai to Singapore

There is no direct public bus from Senai Airport to Singapore. The airport's own advice is to take the shuttle to JB Sentral, then switch to one of the cross-border bus services into Singapore. That means:

  1. Airport shuttle to JB Sentral, around 45 minutes.
  2. Walk through Malaysian departure immigration at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar complex with your bags.
  3. Queue for a cross-border bus over the Causeway.
  4. Get off with all your luggage for Singapore immigration and customs at Woodlands.
  5. Board a bus again, or find a taxi, to reach home.

It works, but with suitcases, children or a late-evening arrival it can easily take longer than the flight itself. The private-car route is simpler: a driver meets you at arrivals, and you stay in the car through both checkpoints until you reach your door. Off-peak, the drive is usually around an hour or a little more to the Singapore side, depending on the checkpoint queue.

Practical tips for Senai

  • Check which checkpoint is quieter. Senai sits between the Causeway and the Second Link, so either crossing works. A quick look at our checkpoint traffic page before you land helps.
  • Avoid Friday evening and holiday-eve arrivals if you can; Singapore-bound traffic builds up at the border at these times.
  • Have some ringgit for the bus, a snack or a coupon taxi. The terminal area has banking services.
  • Turn on data when you land so whoever is meeting you can reach you.
  • Don't book a tight Senai-to-Changi connection. With a border in between, treat them as two separate journeys.

Where a private car helps

A Senai pick-up suits Singaporeans coming home from a domestic Malaysian holiday and Malaysian families visiting relatives in Singapore. Send us your flight number and landing time, and tell us if it changes; your driver confirms the meeting point at arrivals on WhatsApp. Fares are per car, cover tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking, and you pay the driver when you arrive, with no deposit. Child seats are available on request, and if you have a lot of luggage we will suggest the right size of MPV or van.

See fares and details on our Senai Airport to Singapore private car page, or compare every airport route on the airport transfer rates page. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Senai Airport the same as Johor Bahru airport?

Yes. Senai International Airport, code JHB, is the airport that serves Johor Bahru. It is in Senai, north-west of the city, not in JB city centre itself.

Does Senai Airport have more than one terminal?

No. There is a single passenger terminal for both domestic and international flights, so you cannot go to the wrong building.

Can I fly from Senai to Singapore?

There are no regular flights between Senai and Singapore at the time of writing. The two are linked by road, across the Causeway or the Second Link.

How early should I get to Senai for a domestic flight?

Follow your airline's guidance on check-in and bag-drop cut-off times, which are often stricter than travellers expect. If you are coming from Singapore, add the drive and border time on top, plus a buffer for queues.

Can a private car pick me up at Senai late at night?

Yes. We run 24/7, so late-night and early-morning arrivals are covered. Tell us your flight number and we will plan around your actual landing time.
