Desaru Coast has four international resorts on the same stretch of beach, and for families the choice comes down to the ages of your children and how much space you need. In short: Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast suits families who want the waterpark and a busy kids’ club; Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas is the pick for big or multi-generation families who want a villa or residence; The Westin Desaru Coast Resort is a dependable all-rounder; and Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast, formerly One&Only Desaru Coast, is the quiet, nature-focused luxury option.

Below we compare them on the things parents actually ask about: kids’ clubs, room set-ups, pools and how close each one is to the fun. Facilities and promotions change, so check each resort’s own website before you book.

Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast

If your children’s idea of a holiday is non-stop activity, start here. The hotel sits next to Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast and has direct access to the park from its Level 1, so you can walk from your room to the slides without getting back in a car.

  • Roxity Kids Club is billed by the hotel as the largest kids’ club in Desaru Coast. It is for ages 4 to 12, is drop-off only (adults stay outside), runs on a first-come, first-served basis and, according to the hotel at time of writing, is open daily from 10am to 9pm. Activities include music, singing and dance sessions, dress-up and on-stage role play, kids’ yoga, little bakers’ sessions, movies and an outdoor water-play zone.
  • Splash Zone, the water-play area in front of the kids’ club, runs at set times of day with no entrance fee.
  • Book direct for the perks. The hotel’s website currently offers unlimited Roxity Kids Club entry for direct bookings, and some packages add Adventure Waterpark access. Walk-in kids’ club rates are charged by the hour otherwise.
  • The beach is a short buggy ride away rather than right outside the door; the hotel runs a free buggy service.

Good to know: the outdoor music pool is known for its underwater speakers and upbeat atmosphere, which children love and some parents find lively. If you want a calm afternoon nap by the pool, one of the other resorts may suit you better.

The Westin Desaru Coast Resort

The Westin is the middle ground: a large beachfront resort with plenty of pool space, a choice of restaurants and a kids’ programme, without the music-themed energy of Hard Rock.

  • Westin Family Kids Club takes children aged 4 to 12 for creative sessions such as batik painting, terrarium making and seashell crafts, and offers daycare for the same age group. Children need to be toilet-trained, and younger ones can join with a guardian. Charges are billed to your room.
  • Connecting rooms are available, which is often more comfortable than squeezing a family of four into one room.
  • Heavenly Spa by Westin gives parents a break while the kids are at the club.

Check before October 2026 stays: the resort announced roof improvement works above its Seasonal Tastes and Prego restaurants and the Kids Club from 11 August to 30 October 2026, running between 11am and 6pm. Ask how this affects the club during your dates.

Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas

Anantara is the best fit when the whole family is travelling together, from grandparents to teenagers. It is low-rise, modelled on a traditional Malay fishing village, with buildings set around gardens and lagoons. According to the resort’s fact sheet:

  • Two-Bedroom Lagoon Pool Villas are two-storey, with an en-suite master bedroom upstairs, a twin room downstairs and a private pool, and sleep four adults and a child.
  • Three- and Four-Bedroom Beach Residences sit near the sea with an infinity pool and a full kitchen, and can host up to eight adults and four children in the largest one. A private chef and butler are available on request.
  • Standard rooms take two adults and a child, and connecting rooms are available in some room types.
  • Two clubs: Layang-Layang Kids’ Club for younger children and Luncur Ombak Teens’ Club for older ones, which is rare in Desaru and helpful if your teenagers are too old for craft sessions.
  • Two pools: a large lagoon pool in the middle of the resort and an infinity pool by the beach.

Grandparents tend to like the quieter, spread-out layout, but it also means some walking between villas and restaurants. Ask for a villa close to the main building if anyone has limited mobility.

Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast

The resort previously known as One&Only Desaru Coast now operates as Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast. It is the smallest of the four, with 44 suites and one four-bedroom villa spread out in a rainforest setting by the sea, and it is the one to choose if you want space and calm more than slides and crowds.

  • Suites with private plunge pools, and connected suites designed for multi-generation stays.
  • A four-bedroom villa with a 27-metre private infinity pool, the most private option on the coast for a large family.
  • Kids Club activities are built around nature: Junior Chef sessions, Young Gardeners, Nature Detectives and an EcoLab, plus the outdoor Pelaga Laut Playground.
  • Children’s menus at its restaurants and an all-day kids’ menu for in-room dining.
  • A 56-metre infinity pool near the lobby, and the Ember Beach Club with a kids’ pool and a family pool.

Check before you book: the resort said Ember Beach Club would close from April to October 2026 for enhancements, with the main pool, dining and beach access staying open. Confirm it has reopened if the family pool matters to you.

A more casual option outside Desaru Coast

If you prefer an apartment-style stay with a kitchenette, older resorts along the public Desaru beach, such as Lotus Desaru Beach Resort & Spa, offer multi-bedroom suites and their own water-play facilities. Standards vary more than at the four international resorts, so read recent guest reviews and check that facilities are open for your dates.

How to choose by age

  • Under 4: most kids’ clubs here start at age 4, so you will be with your toddler most of the time. Choose for pools and space: a plunge-pool suite at Mandarin Oriental or a pool villa at Anantara.
  • Ages 4–12: all four resorts have clubs for this age. Hard Rock wins for energy and waterpark access; the Westin and Mandarin Oriental are calmer.
  • Teenagers: Anantara’s teens’ club, or Hard Rock for the waterpark next door.
  • Three generations: Anantara’s residences or Mandarin Oriental’s connected suites and villa give everyone their own room under one roof.

Booking tips for families

  • Mind the monsoon. From roughly November to February the sea is often too rough to swim, so pick a resort with good pools for those months.
  • Book school holidays early. Family rooms, villas and connecting rooms go first.
  • Check event weekends. IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast and the Ombak Festival fill the resorts; check dates on the official Desaru Coast site.
  • Plan around check-in time. Hard Rock and Mandarin Oriental list 3pm check-in, so an early arrival works best with a waterpark morning or a long lunch first.
  • Use the resort shuttle. Desaru Coast runs a hop-on, hop-off shuttle between its properties, handy for dinner at a neighbouring resort.

Getting the whole family there

A resort holiday with children means suitcases, a stroller, swim bags and sometimes a cooler, so pick the vehicle for the luggage, not just the number of people. A Toyota Innova carries up to six passengers with one big suitcase and three hand-carry bags. Most families of four or five with resort luggage are more comfortable in a Toyota Alphard, Vellfire or Hyundai Staria (up to six passengers, two big suitcases and four hand-carry bags). Two families travelling together can share a Toyota Hiace (up to nine passengers with luggage). Compare them on our MPV fleet page.

With Luxway SGMY, your driver picks you up anywhere in Singapore, everyone stays in the car through immigration at both checkpoints, and you are dropped at your resort’s lobby. The drive takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. Fares are per car and include tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking: from SGD 160 one way in a Toyota Innova, SGD 200 in an Alphard or Vellfire, or SGD 220 in a Staria, and the same fare for the ride home. Child seats are available for SGD 10 per seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Desaru resort is closest to Adventure Waterpark?

Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast. It has direct access to the waterpark from its Level 1, so guests can walk over without a car.

Are the kids’ clubs at Desaru resorts free?

It depends on the resort and how you book. Hard Rock currently includes unlimited Roxity Kids Club entry with direct bookings, while other clubs may charge for some activities or daycare. Ask when you book.

Is One&Only Desaru Coast still open?

The property now operates as Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast. If you search for the old name, look for the Mandarin Oriental listing instead.

Can we visit another resort’s restaurants during our stay?

Often, yes, but policies vary, so call or message the restaurant to book a table first. The hop-on, hop-off shuttle links the properties. Pools and kids’ clubs are normally for staying guests only.

How many nights do families usually stay in Desaru?

Two nights is the most common for a first visit: one day for the waterpark and one for the beach, pools or an outing. Three nights feels more relaxed with young children.
