IKEA Tebrau, AEON Mall Tebrau City and Toppen sit next to each other in Taman Desa Tebrau, so you can cover furniture, groceries and lunch in about four to five hours. The trick is the order: arrive at IKEA when it opens, shop the showroom with a list, eat before the lunch crowd, then finish with groceries at AEON or Toppen and head home before the afternoon queues build. This plan walks you through each block, explains how to get bulky items back to Singapore, and covers the customs and food rules that catch people out.

Before you leave Singapore

Measure first, shop second

Most wasted IKEA trips come from guessing. Measure the space at home, note the product names you want from the IKEA Malaysia website, and check the stock at Tebrau online the night before. Write down the aisle and bin numbers for flat-pack items if the site shows them; it saves a lot of wandering in the warehouse.

Decide how big your haul will be

This matters for the car you book. A few cushions, a lamp and a bag of kitchenware fit in any car boot. A bookcase, a wardrobe frame or a bed base comes in long, heavy flat-pack boxes that need a van. Tell us roughly what you plan to buy when you book, and we will suggest a vehicle that fits the boxes as well as the passengers.

Remember IKEA delivers within Malaysia only

IKEA Tebrau offers home delivery and same-day delivery to selected Johor postcodes, but these services are for Malaysian addresses. If you are taking items back to Singapore, you carry them home yourself, so plan your vehicle accordingly.

The half-day plan, block by block

9.00am: Pick-up in Singapore

Leaving around 9am on a weekday usually gets you to Tebrau close to IKEA’s 10am opening, though crossing times vary from day to day. On weekends, set off earlier. The Woodlands Causeway is the natural crossing for Tebrau, which lies north-east of the JB city centre.

9.30–10.00am: Breakfast at IKEA

The Swedish Restaurant and the Café open at 9.30am, half an hour before the store. A quick breakfast here means nobody in the group is shopping hungry, and you are first in line when the showroom opens.

10.00am–12.00pm: Showroom, then Market Hall

Walk the showroom with your list and a phone camera rather than a trolley. Photograph the price tags of anything you like; they show the warehouse location for self-serve flat packs. Then work through the Market Hall for smaller items such as kitchenware, storage boxes, frames and textiles.

  • Kids along? Småland, IKEA’s supervised play area, takes children between 100 cm and 130 cm tall who are toilet trained. At time of writing it runs 3pm–8pm on weekdays and 10am–8.30pm on weekends, so it suits a weekend morning better than a weekday one.
  • Short on time? IKEA Tebrau offers a picking service (from RM23, at time of writing), where staff collect flat-pack items for you. You can also order online and use Click & Collect, which IKEA lists as free with no minimum purchase; the counter is open noon to 8pm.

12.00–12.45pm: Lunch before the rush

Eating just before noon is the easiest way to avoid queues. Choose the Swedish Restaurant if the group wants a sit-down meal, the Bistro near the exit for a quick bite, or save your appetite for the food hall at AEON.

12.45–2.30pm: AEON Mall Tebrau City

AEON is the place for the grocery half of the trip. The supermarket is good for Malaysian snacks, sauces, rice and household goods, and the department store covers clothes, bedding and small appliances. Book lovers should allow time for Tsutaya, the Japanese bookstore chain’s first Johor branch. If someone in the group is not a shopper, the TGV cinema is an easy way to keep them happy for two hours.

2.30–3.00pm: Toppen top-up, then home

Toppen, right next to IKEA, has a Jaya Grocer on the ground floor if you missed anything. Then load up and head back. A mid-afternoon return on a weekday usually beats the evening rush; on Sundays, the queues back into Singapore can build from early afternoon.

Prefer an afternoon trip?

Flip the plan: leave Singapore after lunch, do AEON first, eat an early dinner, and finish at IKEA, which stays open until 10pm. Evening IKEA is calmer on weekdays, and a late return can be smoother than the early-evening peak. Just avoid Friday evenings and the night before a public holiday, when traffic into Johor is heavy.

Getting your purchases home

What fits in which vehicle

Your haulSuggested vehicle
Bags of small items, cushions or a lamp, for up to 4 peopleRandom Standard Car or Toyota Innova
Small to medium flat packs plus a family of up to 6Toyota Alphard / Vellfire or Hyundai Staria (2 big + 4 hand-carry bags)
Long or heavy flat packs, several boxes, or a bigger groupToyota Hiace or 18-seater van

If in doubt, send us the box dimensions printed on the IKEA product page. It is much easier to plan the right vehicle in advance than to leave a wardrobe behind.

Customs and GST on the way back

Singapore Customs gives travellers GST import relief on new goods for personal use: up to S$100 if you were away for less than 48 hours, and up to S$500 for 48 hours or more, at time of writing. Furniture can push you over that limit quickly. If it does, declare and pay the GST in advance through the Customs@SG web app, and keep your IKEA receipts handy. Our Singapore customs allowance guide explains the rules in more detail.

Leave the meatballs behind

The Swedish Food Market is tempting, but the Singapore Food Agency does not allow travellers to bring meat products from Malaysia into Singapore for personal use, and unapproved meat is confiscated at the checkpoint. Enjoy the meatballs in the restaurant and stick to biscuits, sauces and other non-meat packaged foods within SFA’s personal allowance. Check SFA’s list of allowed food before you buy.

Practical tips

  • Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends, Malaysian public holidays and Singapore school holidays bring bigger crowds to all three malls.
  • Compare prices first. IKEA Malaysia and IKEA Singapore price items separately, and Malaysia is not always cheaper once you add GST and the effort of transport.
  • Bring a foldable trolley bag for groceries; supermarket bags split easily under heavy bottles.
  • Carry a card and a QR payment app. All three malls take cards; small stalls may prefer cash.
  • Check flat-pack weight. Some boxes need two people to lift, so shop with a helper.

Why a private car makes this trip easier

The Tebrau cluster is easy to reach but awkward to leave with a trolley full of boxes. Buses mean hauling flat packs through two immigration halls, and ride-hailing cars rarely have the boot space. With a Luxway SGMY private car from Singapore to Johor Bahru, your driver collects you anywhere in Singapore, everyone stays in the vehicle through immigration at both checkpoints, and your boxes go straight from the IKEA pick-up point into the boot. Fares are per car and already include tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking, starting from SGD 100 one way in a Toyota Innova, with the same fare for the return.

For this kind of half-day, ask for a return trip with waiting time (SGD 40 per hour on transfers), or book our Day Trip Service if you want to add Mount Austin or another mall and keep the car for 8, 10 or 12 hours.

Book your Tebrau shopping run

Tell us your date, pick-up address, group size and roughly what you plan to buy, and we will match the vehicle to your haul. See how to book, reserve on our online booking page, or Whatsapp us. There is no deposit: you pay the driver on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can IKEA Tebrau deliver to Singapore?

IKEA Tebrau’s home delivery and same-day delivery services are for addresses in Malaysia. If you are buying for a Singapore home, plan to carry your items back yourself and book a vehicle with enough boot space.

How long do I need for IKEA and AEON Tebrau?

About four to five hours covers a focused IKEA visit with a meal, plus groceries at AEON or Toppen. Add another hour or two if you want to browse the showroom slowly or watch a film.

Which checkpoint is best for IKEA Tebrau?

The Woodlands Causeway is usually the natural choice, as Tebrau lies north-east of the JB city centre. Your driver may still use the Tuas Second Link if the Causeway is badly jammed.

Do I need to pay GST on IKEA furniture brought back to Singapore?

Possibly. Travellers get GST import relief on new goods up to S$100 for trips under 48 hours, and up to S$500 for 48 hours or more (at time of writing). Anything above the relief should be declared, and GST can be paid in advance via the Customs@SG web app.

Is AEON Tebrau City the same as AEON Bukit Indah?

No. AEON Mall Tebrau City is in Tebrau next to IKEA and Toppen. AEON Bukit Indah is a separate, smaller mall on the west side of JB, nearer the Tuas Second Link.
