Want a slower day in Johor Bahru that is not about malls or queues? Pair Puteri Harbour and Danga Bay. Both sit on the Strait of Johor on the western side of JB: Puteri Harbour is a quiet marina in Iskandar Puteri close to the Tuas Second Link, while Danga Bay is a longer seafront nearer the city. Spend the afternoon at the marina, then catch the sunset at Danga Bay. Set your expectations first, though. These are places for a stroll, a meal with a view and a few photos, not all-day attractions.

The two are roughly 20 minutes apart by car outside rush hour, so one afternoon covers both comfortably.

Puteri Harbour: the quiet marina

Puteri Harbour is a waterfront township built around a marina at the southern tip of Iskandar Puteri. Low-rise residences, serviced apartments and restaurants face the water, and rows of yachts and motorboats line the pontoons. On weekdays it can feel almost empty, which is part of the appeal if you want space and fresh sea air.

Walk the promenade

The waterside walkway runs along the marina, with views across the strait. Go in the late afternoon, when the sun is lower and the light turns golden over the boats. There is little shade at midday, so bring hats and water if you arrive early.

Eat with a harbour view

The best-known name here is Hard Rock Cafe Puteri Harbour, which has an al fresco terrace overlooking the marina and live music on some nights. Other cafés and restaurants around the waterfront open and close more often than in the city, so check recent reviews or social media for what is operating before you set your heart on one.

Kota Iskandar next door

Right beside Puteri Harbour is Kota Iskandar, Johor’s state administrative centre. Its grand government buildings and the ceremonial Dataran Mahkota square make a striking, uncrowded backdrop for family photos. It is a short drive or a longer walk from the marina; on a hot day, let the car do the work.

The ferry terminal

Puteri Harbour International Ferry Terminal handles boats to Indonesian islands such as Batam and Karimun. If you are thinking of island-hopping from Johor, check the ferry operator’s current schedule directly, as timetables change.

What is no longer there

Many Singaporeans remember Puteri Harbour for its indoor family theme parks, including Sanrio Hello Kitty Town. Those parks closed for good at the end of 2019. If you are planning a family day, combine the marina with things to do near Legoland Malaysia instead, as Legoland is only a short drive away.

Danga Bay: sunsets on the seafront

Danga Bay stretches along the coast between JB city centre and Skudai, with a long seafront, landscaped parkland and newer high-rise developments behind it. It is livelier than Puteri Harbour, especially in the evening, when locals come for walks, cycling and dinner.

The beach strip and promenade

A sandy shore and walkway look out over the strait towards the evening sun, which is why Danga Bay is one of JB’s favourite sunset spots. Arrive about 30 to 45 minutes before sunset, which in Johor falls around 7pm all year, to find a good spot and watch the sky change.

Beletime Danga Bay

This marine-themed mall sits on the waterfront, with a supermarket, a cinema, family-friendly shops and a range of casual restaurants. It is handy for air-conditioning, toilets and a simple dinner, and it gives you a fallback if a storm rolls in. Our guide to JB shopping malls shows how it compares with the big malls in the city.

Beach bars and cafés

Along the shore you will find a few laid-back bars and cafés with outdoor seating facing the water, popular for an evening drink. As with Puteri Harbour, outlets change, so treat any one place as a bonus rather than the reason for the trip.

A sample waterfront afternoon

This plan suits a relaxed day for couples, friends or families with older children. Enter Johor via the Tuas Second Link and work from west to east, so you finish nearer the city.

With young children, swap the lunch stop for a morning at Legoland Malaysia and keep only the sunset part of the plan. Our 25 ideas for things to do in Johor Bahru has more stops if you want to fill a longer day.

Practical tips

  • Watch the weather. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, especially in the monsoon months. Keep an indoor option, such as Beletime Danga Bay, in the plan.
  • Carry ringgit and a QR payment app. Restaurants usually take cards, but small stalls and parking machines may not.
  • Bring insect repellent if you plan to stay by the water after dark.
  • Time your return. Evening traffic back into Singapore builds on Sunday nights and before public holidays. Our Woodlands vs Tuas checkpoint guide explains which crossing tends to suit which part of JB.
  • Check before you go. Opening hours and outlets at both waterfronts change often, so confirm anything specific on the day.

Getting between the two waterfronts

Puteri Harbour and Danga Bay are spread out, public transport between them is limited, and ride-hailing can be slow in the quieter parts of Iskandar Puteri. A private car keeps the day simple. With Luxway SGMY, your driver collects you anywhere in Singapore, everyone stays in the car through immigration at both checkpoints, and you are dropped right at the marina. Fares are per car and include tolls, checkpoint fees, fuel and parking, with no deposit and payment to the driver on arrival.

For a multi-stop day like the plan above, our Day Trip Service keeps one car and driver with you for 8, 10 or 12 hours, so you can linger at sunset without worrying about the ride home.

Plan your waterfront day

See vehicles and fares on our Singapore to Johor Bahru private car page, or our Singapore to Legoland Malaysia page if you are combining the day with the theme park. Then Whatsapp us your date, pick-up point and group size, or follow our how to book guide. We run 24/7.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Puteri Harbour worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy a quiet waterfront walk, harbour views and a relaxed meal. It is not a full-day attraction, so pair it with Legoland Malaysia, Kota Iskandar or a sunset at Danga Bay.

Is Hello Kitty Town at Puteri Harbour still open?

No. Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and the other indoor family park in the same building closed permanently at the end of 2019.

What time is sunset at Danga Bay?

Sunset in Johor is around 7pm throughout the year, give or take about 15 minutes. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes earlier for the best light.

Which checkpoint is better for Puteri Harbour?

The Tuas Second Link is usually the more direct crossing for Puteri Harbour and Iskandar Puteri. For Danga Bay, either crossing can work, and your driver will choose based on traffic.

Can we visit both waterfronts with young children?

Yes, but keep it short. Toddlers usually enjoy the open space and boats at Puteri Harbour, and Beletime Danga Bay gives you air-conditioning, toilets and casual food for a break before the sunset.
